When should you premove?

Premove only when every legal reply leaves your move safe, or when a different reply makes the move illegal and cancels it. Otherwise, wait for the board to update.

Quick test

Ask what happens after the reply you did not expect.

If your move cancels, it is usually safe to queue. If it still plays, make sure it works against every reply. One bad reply means you wait.

Choose before you queue

Recapture

Your piece still sits on the capture square.

If your opponent does not capture it, the premove becomes illegal and cancels.

Queue

Forced move

The same move works after every legal reply.

Check every reply once. Queue the move only when none of them changes the answer.

Check first

Quiet move

The move stays legal after several replies.

A legal premove still plays after a surprise threat or capture.

Wait

Tactical position

A check, capture, promotion, or loose piece is on the board.

The next reply can change the position too much to queue safely.

Wait

Safe recapture

The recapture exists only if Black takes your piece. If Black plays something else, the premove cancels.

Unsafe quiet move

The move h3 stays legal after Black captures your queen, so the premove plays and loses another tempo.

Adjust to the clock

Use a wider safety margin while you have time. Take more calculated risk only when the clock forces you to move.

More than 10 seconds

Use premoves for clear recaptures and lines you have already checked.

2 to 10 seconds

Look actively for forced replies and familiar endgame routes.

Under 2 seconds

Keep legal moves flowing. A playable move matters more than the best move.

This progression follows GM Aman Hambleton's Building Bullet Habits series.

Try a simple premove line

Start with a passed pawn whose route to promotion is already clear.
