Queen endings · advanced
Queen vs advanced pawn
Check the king onto the promotion square, then bring your king.
The rule
Side checks force the king in front of its pawn and give your king time to approach.
How to play it
- 1
Check from the side
Force the king toward the square directly in front of its pawn.
- 2
Bring up the king
When the king blocks its own pawn, bring your king closer.
- 3
Repeat, then capture
Rebuild the checking loop until the pawn can be captured safely.
Study the line, then play it
Step through the example. Then play your moves from the same position.

Starting position
Play through the line one move at a time.
Before you play
Moves to calculate
- 1.Read the king reply
- 2.Choose the checking side
- 3.Walk the king only while the pawn is blocked
Check each reply because
Only the king move while the pawn is blocked is safe to premove. Choose each queen check after the reply.
Stop when
The pawn can promote with check or the king chooses a different checking lane.
Common mistake
Taking the pawn too early can stalemate the defending king.
Stop the pawn, then checkmate.
Start with a comfortable clock. Reduce it when the position feels familiar. Your record is 0/0.
