Philidor defense
Hold a rook ending by guarding the third rank, then checking from behind.
The rule
Keep the attacking king off the sixth rank. Check from behind after the pawn advances.
How to play it
- 1
Hold the third rank
Move the rook across the third rank so the king cannot step in front of its pawn.

Wait sideways
Keep the rook active until the attacker commits the pawn.
- 3
Check from behind
Retreat and repeat checks once the pawn reaches the sixth rank.
